Maria Cunningham
Resident in Counseling
About Maria Cunningham
For me, counseling is rooted in connection, safety, and attunement. I strive to create an atmosphere of warmth and calm, where you can explore your thoughts and emotions without pressure. Together, we look at what’s happening in your life right now, build practical coping skills, and make space to process the experiences and wounds that continue to shape your story.
I am a Resident in Counseling who works with children, adolescents, and adults. I earned my M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Divine Mercy University. With more than fifteen years of experience supporting children, teens, and families, I bring a depth of empathy and relational understanding to my work with clients facing suffering, transitions, and significant life challenges.
I have a special passion for working with children and offer Child-Centered Play Therapy as a core part of my practice. Play is a child’s natural language, and the playroom provides a safe, supportive space where feelings can be expressed freely—especially those that may feel too overwhelming or confusing to put into words. Through play, creativity, and gentle structure, children learn to name their emotions, build resilience, and develop healthier ways of coping.
My clinical work includes supporting individuals and families in areas such as anxiety, grief and loss, trauma and adverse experiences, maternal mental health, OCD, depression, parenting concerns, marital and couple challenges, neurodiversity across the lifespan, and faith-related or spiritual struggles.
I draw from a range of evidence-based and relational approaches, including Child-Centered Play Therapy, Attachment-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Family Systems work, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), mindfulness and somatic awareness, and Gottman-informed relational interventions. I am currently pursuing advanced training in EMDR, EFT certification, and Maternal Mental Health specialization.
As a mother of ten children and a grandmother, I understand firsthand the beauty and complexity of family life. I live in Northern Virginia and, outside of counseling, enjoy gardening, real estate, piano lessons, reading, time with family, and sharing a warm cup of coffee with friends.
I offer in-person sessions as well as virtual appointments throughout Virginia, including evening and Saturday hours, to support a wide range of schedules.
